At the Green Carnival at Happy Valley Racecourse on 15 December, Club staff enjoyed a fun afternoon and a break from work to celebrate the success of the second year of Green Action, a staff engagement programme that enhances staff awareness of green living and sustainable growth.

Last year's Green Action 2011 programme had two main themes – Recycling and Green Mobility, both of which were reflected at the carnival.

The centerpiece of the carnival was a giant Christmas tree made entirely from recycled materials.

During the carnival, staff and their family and friends got the chance to view state-of-the-art electric vehicles up close, as well as purchase some of the trendiest up-cycling products in town.

Sticking with the sustainable theme, carnival goers enjoyed special lowcarbon Christmas refreshments, made from locally sourced ingredients.

As well as a range of games and booths, craft stalls gave people the chance to try their hand at making their own Christmas ornaments and accessories using recycled materials such as used aluminium drink cans.

Staff also took part in a green relay race using batons made from recycled materials to symbolise the Club's desire to pass on the sustainability message to more people.

Staff take part in DIY workshops and have fun spreading the sustainability message.

A sustainable future
Bearing witness to the Club's latest contributions to environmental protection at the HKJC Green Carnival were Chairman of the Legislative Council's Panel on Environmental Affairs, The Hon Chan Hak-kan and representatives of major green organisations.

Sustainability issues affect everyone in Hong Kong, and HKJC hopes to lead by example
HKJC Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht- Bresges told guests that the Club was committed to improving the quality of life of Hong Kong people in an environmentally friendly manner. He added that sustainability issues affect everyone in Hong Kong, and the HKJC hopes to lead by example.

To achieve this, the Club has included the goal of sustainability into many of its everyday operations and processes across the Clubhouses and Racecourses.

These efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the Club has been been the recipient of several awards for its green practices, in the areas of management and procurement, among others.
