Tao Cheuk Shing, a teacher at the Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College, explained that the Fund did not cover senior secondary students in the past, so students were not provided with subsidies once they got to senior grades and had to give up the activities in which they had been participating. He greatly approves of the new initiatives to extend the Fund to cover these students. “Under the new scheme, eligible students will no longer be limited to those receiving the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance and full grant under the Student Financial Assistance Scheme,” he added. “This provides schools with more flexibility to allocate subsidies to benefit students with financial difficulties.”

The new scheme offers greater flexibility and enables schools to allocate subsidies to benefit more needy students, says teacher Tao Cheuk Shing
William Y Yiu, Executive Director, Charities of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, said that all students should enrich their learning through different activities when they are young, so as to gain more experience and fully realise their potential. “The establishment of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Life-Wide Learning Fund and the extension to cover activities held in mainland China and overseas from September 2007 onwards allows students to participate in activities such as exchange programmes and cross-border expeditions,” Yiu said. “It is hoped that all primary and secondary students will be given equal opportunities to learn outside the classroom.”

ABOUT THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB LIFE-WIDE LEARNING FUND
Set up in 2002 with a donation of over HK$140 million from the Club’s Charities Trust, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Life-Wide Learning Fund originally provided financial support to students from Primary Four to Secondary Three, benefiting 90% of primary, secondary and special schools in Hong Kong.

In September 2007, the Trust injected a further HK$260 million to extend the Fund’s coverage to include students at all primary and secondary school levels, from Primary One to Secondary Seven. Under the new scheme, beneficiaries will no longer be limited to students who are receiving full Student Financial Assistance Agency grants or Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA). In addition, schools were given greater flexibility to allocate subsidies to benefit other needy students.
