With a rich history of top class winners and a HK$20 million purse, the Audemars Piquet QEII Cup is one of the highlights of the Hong Kong racing calendar. |
Held this year on Sunday April 30th, the 2000m contest often attracts a large International contingent as well as Hong Kong’s established middle-distance performers. |
Last season multiple Group One winners from around the globe descended on Sha Tin to take on local hopes, as the likes of Highland Reel (高地之舞), Ertijaal (傲騰作), Nuovo Record (新紀錄) and Satono Crown (里見皇冠) went to post. The prize however stayed in Hong Kong as BMW Derby winner Werther (明月千里) ran out a hugely impressive winner from Military Attack (Retired) (軍事出擊) and Blazing Speed (將男), to complete a Hong Kong 1-2-3. |
John Moore’s (約翰摩亞) ultra-game son of Tavistock was having just his fifth start in Hong Kong, and it was a performance which ultimately clinched him Horse of the Year honours. |

The 2017 renewal promises to be a mouthwatering event as Werther (明月千里) bids to go back-to-back in the race after a fine return from injury in the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup back in February. He is likely to be joined in the field by the 2017 BMW Hong Kong Derby victor, as well as usual suspects like Blazing Speed (將男), Designs On Rome (威爾頓) and Secret Weapon (天才). From further afield we are likely to see a large Japanese entry as well as the usual International assault from France, Ireland and Australia. |
