Hong Kong’s Enduring Spirit Lives on
  • The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: Mei Ho House Hong Kong Spirit Learning Project aims to preserve the historical significance of Mei Ho House and Shek Kip Mei Estate while educating students about the social development of Hong Kong from the 1950s to 1970s
  • Since its launch in 2017, the project has had a significant impact on young minds and fostered a deeper understanding of Hong Kong's history and resilience

Mei Ho House is one of the last surviving resettlement “H” blocks, constructed in 1954 after the disastrous fire that engulfed Shek Kip Mei.

To help students learn more about its history and the lives of the people who lived there, the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association, with support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has established a holistic learning project.

Through seminars, guided tours, drama experiences and experiential workshops, students are able to gain a deeper understanding of the many hardships endured by Hong Kong people as they struggled to build a better future for themselves and their families.

Further inspiring examples of Hong Kong’s “can-do” spirit are provided by celebrity speakers who share personal stories of overcoming challenges and excelling in their studies and careers.

To promote inter-generational exchange, students are encouraged to take part in an annual essay competition. Through interviewing elderly family members, capturing their memories of the past alongside their own thoughts and feelings, students are able to enrich their understanding of Hong Kong’s past, present and future.
