A Commitment to Green Mobility and Efficiency
  • Through waste reduction initiatives, adoption of energy-efficient technologies and biodiversity measures, the HKJC actively minimises its environmental footprint
  • The Club has also introduced electric vehicles from 2008 and Biodiesel B5 from 2012 to reduce carbon emissions in its tracks operations

The Club is taking significant strides towards sustainability in track maintenance and raceday operations. By championing the Reduce and Recycle principles and implementing measures to improve energy efficiency, the Club aims to mitigate its environmental impact.

Measures include waste reduction through mulching production from yard wastes and the reuse of potting mixes in the nursery, according to Pako Ip, Executive Manager of Tracks and Raceday Operations.

The Tracks Operations also adopt thematic approaches such as utilising greener fuels, introducing electric vehicles such as golf carts, and using electric tools wherever robust models and technologies are available. Design and maintenance practices to foster biodiversity are also prioritised, with the use of native tree species and quality greening practices to optimise biomass, species diversity, wildlife attraction, and amenity values in the Club’s Park and Grounds maintenance approaches.

“The Sha Tin Racecourse is often visited by birds with an egretry inside the Penfold Park,” Ip says.

Overcoming Challenges

The Club’s pursuit of sustainability is not always without challenges. “Limitations in sourcing high-power tractors, vehicles, and electric tools, as well as the lack of local dealerships, after-sale services, and technical support, pose obstacles to adopting newer technologies,” explains Ip.

“Additionally, the Hong Kong market's small scale limits the availability of models and the establishment of a complete supply chain for electric vehicles.”

However, the Club remains dedicated to continually seeking applications of sustainability practices in track operations. One of the major successes of our endeavours has been the use of Biodiesel B5 since 2012, and the introduction of electric vehicles as early as 2008. Through direct fuelling with supplier, we also nearly halved the fuel costs spent on tracks machinery compared to regular diesel since February 2023.

Through ongoing dedication and collaboration, the HKJC continues to exemplify its commitment to sustainability in the sports and entertainment industry.
