For the Love of Animals

Hong Kong is witnessing a rise in pet ownership, with over 10% of families now keeping a domestic animal. However, this increase also raises the risk of mistreatment, abandonment and the spread of zoonotic diseases by strays.

To address these concerns and promote animal welfare education, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has opened the SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre in Tsing Yi. It is the organisation’s first animal welfare and education centre in the New Territories.

Constructed with the help of a more than HK$300 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the new 93,000-sq-ft centre provides a wide range of welfare services, including animal rescue, inspection, cruelty prevention, and emergency shelter for rescued and at-risk animals.

In addition to grooming services, the centre boasts state-of-the-art veterinary clinic that is fully equipped with diagnostic equipment and an in-house laboratory for comprehensive medical care. Meanwhile, on-site seminar rooms will facilitate public education activities on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

The Club’s donation represents the latest chapter in its longstanding partnership with the SPCA. In 1965, the Club supported the establishment of the SPCA’s Kowloon Centre and later, in 1997, its redevelopment. Additionally, the CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team has participated in SPCA activities since 2010. Looking ahead, the Club remains fully committed to maintaining this meaningful relationship to promote animal welfare.
