A Sustainable Vision for a Greener Hong Kong

The Club’s commitment to environmental sustainability goes beyond corporate responsibility. By optimising resource efficiency, reducing our carbon footprint, and fostering community partnerships, we are contributing to a greener future for the betterment of Hong Kong.

Here, we take a look back at some of the highlights of our transformative journey towards a sustainable and prosperous society.

HKJC Sustainability Major Milestones Timeline

2008

  • As a legacy of the 2008 Olympics Equestrian events in Hong Kong, the Club started sending stables waste to be composted. Today, approximately 20% of stables waste avoids being sent to landfill per year.

2009

  • Establishment of the Environmental Management Committee.
  • Introduction of the first Hong Kong Jockey Club Environmental Policy.
  • Implementation of Green Procurement Guidelines.

2011

  • 10,000 tonnes of carbon credits were purchased, marking the first such investment for the Club.

2013

  • In a bid to reduce office paper use, the Club implemented a plan to streamline and measure printing. In 10 years, overall purchased copy paper reduced by 46% across Hong Kong operations.

2014

  • Installation of Centralised District Cooling Systems at the Sha Tin Racecourse.
  • Implementation of Supplier Sustainability Guidelines.
  • The Club’s first biodiversity study was conducted over 2014-15 at Penfold Park, Happy Valley Racecourse and Beas River Country Club. The findings showed that a rich ecosystem of natural life coexists with the Club’s operations.

2015

  • The Club purchased its first fleet of electric passenger vehicles (19 units) - today, the Club’s fleet boasts over 60 electric or hybrid passenger vehicles.
  • Sha Tin Communications and Technology Centre obtained BEAM Plus Gold and LEED Gold certifications, and the ASHRAE 2016 Region XIII (Asia) Technology Award.

2018

  • The Club unveiled its Avoid Single-use Plastics Policy, introducing a ban on seven commonly used items.
  • Water reuse and protection of the Liuxi River near Conghua Racecourse was achieved by installing a Total Water Management System that treats and resuses 100% grey water derived from operations. The system also encompasses rainwater harvesting and first-flush collection via an onsite lagoon.

2020

  • The Hilltop in The Valley obtained BEAM Plus Gold certification.

2021

  • The Jockey Club SolarCare Programme (JC SolarCare) was initiated to support the installation of solar panels across the community and targeted to complete by 2026.
  • Installation of solar photovallic (PV) panels across all the Club’s Hong Kong operations commenced in 2021. When completed, the project will generate up to 5 million kWh of renewable energy per year.
